How to Open a Badly-Wrapped Present
CamDOSA event 9 February 2016
Prevent is a government initiative to stop people becoming involved in extremism and/or in supporting terrorism. It affects everyone; students of any age, staff and homestays. ELT providers have a statutory duty to comply with the Prevent strategy and could be inspected from January 2016.
This session looks first at Prevent generally and then specifically at how it may affect academic content. Prevent areas covered include
- understanding core information
- recognising vulnerable students
- challenging extremism
- finding opportunities to promote British values, especially via the curriculum
The interactive session will include small group discussion, particularly focusing on Prevent obligations and the curriculum.
CamDOSA event 10 December 2015
New approaches to TD - a case study in managing change -
Josh Round
In our competitive market, and with the continuous ‘inspections-fuelled’ drive for increases in quality and excellence, it is inevitable that academic managers will have to look at both how to improve teaching standards and manage change in their LTO.
In this talk I will go through the steps I took to implement new approaches to teacher development after becoming the DOS of a large team of experienced teachers.
The aim of the session is to provide a dual focus: on key principles for effective professional development for teachers, and on the challenges you need to consider when introducing change.

The Power of Images
by Ben Goldstein
Thanks to digital technology, never have we been able to access and manipulate so many images in so little time. We will look at ways we can exploit such images for their language learning potential and cultural significance and as a way to engage our learners on an imaginative level. Practical tasks featuring many different image types will be presented.
Ben Goldstein teaches on the MATESOL programme at the New School, New York and at the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya in Barcelona. He has published a methodological handbook for teachers, Working with Images (Cambridge) and is the main author of Richmond Publishing's adult coursebook series Framework and New Framework.
